Sourdough Breathable Fabric Jar Covers with Elastic Time Bands (5-Pack)

You don't need a fancy specialty jar for your sourdough starter. A regular 1-quart wide-mouth mason jar works perfectly. Stretch one of these over the top and that's the whole setup — jar, cover, done.

Why it earns its place

These breathable fabric covers keep fruit flies out while still letting your starter breathe — exactly what it needs. The elastic bands that come with them also double as a simple way to mark the time and date, because trust me… you will forget when you last fed it.

A starter on the counter is giving off gas and it needs somewhere for that to go. Screw a solid lid down on an active jar and you get pressure, a wet skin on top, and eventually a mess on the shelf. Cloth solves all three and costs almost nothing.

Affordable, reusable, and made for everyday use.

How I actually use it

Just stretch one over your mason jar and you're set. No band to fasten, no rubber band hunting, no square of plastic wrap going in the bin twice a day.

Slide the elastic band down the outside of the jar until it sits level with the top of the fresh feed. That gives you a line to measure against, so you can see at a glance whether your starter has doubled or whether it peaked hours ago and is already sinking back.

When the starter goes back in the fridge, take the cloth off and switch to a Ball leak-proof plastic lid. Keep five in rotation and there's always a clean one when the last is in the wash.

What to know before you buy

A cloth cover is not a lid. It's for the counter only, and the moment your starter goes into the fridge you need to swap it for something solid — leave the fabric on in there and the top dries.

They get crusty. Rinse them, dry them flat, and wash them properly every week or two.
